COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The student engages in the study of various components of the advanced practice role in nursing from an historical and contemporary perspective. Theoretical and scientific foundations that support the advanced practice role are explored. Specific role competencies integral to successful advanced practice nursing are critically examined. Ethical, legal, financial and regulatory issues are examined as they relate to proactive advanced practice in an interdisciplinary and evolving health care system.

Course Objectives:

1. Analyze the development of advanced practice roles in nursing from an historical

perspective.

2. Critically examine the impact of contemporary ethical, legal, financial and

regulatory issues on the advanced practice role in nursing.

3. Analyze the ways in which specific components of the advanced practice role as a

direct care provider, educator, advocate, collaborator, manager of systems,

consultant and researcher are implemented in the clinical setting.

4. Evaluate current research related to the advanced practice role.

5. Examine current models of health care delivery and their impact on the advanced

practice role.

6. Evaluate the implication of current health care policy on the advanced practice role

in nursing.

7. Discuss critical elements related to professional leadership for the advance practice nurse (advocacy, leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, communication, assertiveness, proactive practice, teaching/learning).

8. Evaluate changing demographics related to consumers, nurses and health care providers for their impact on current and future advance practice roles.

9. Evaluate the application of appropriate nursing theories in advance practice
