Project Management

BUS517 Project Management Week7 Discussion

  • As you learned in Week 6, your project sponsor and customer informed you that you have to deliver your project much sooner than anticipated. When you break the news to your team, they are not happy with the decision because they are concerned the project will now fail. Using the information you learned from readings, what can you do as a leader to ensure your project team that this is the right thing to do? What will you do to motivate them? –  250 words initial post, refs and cite
  • After posting your response, respond to at least one of your classmates on their suggestions. –  reply to below post in 100 words

(Here is the my classmate answer that you have to respond.)

As a project manager I would make sure to use the change curve. I would make sure that changes would be address very clear and concise and try to mitigate any issues ahead of time that people may have during the transition. Listening and communicating any concerns that the teams may have so that they can be dealt with as they occur. Allow the team time to adjust to any changes that need to be made. I would allow for compensation for extra hours when needed for completion to be made. Helping employees go through changes and increase rates of adoption and utilization is the key.

You need to check the following week 6 as mentioned in the above instructions:

Here is the question from week 6 discussion that I discussed below

  • Your project sponsor and customer are impressed with your project schedule, but due to some factors out of their control, you’ve been told to deliver your project early, roughly 15% earlier than anticipated. Using the information from the readings, explain how you would go about assessing the possibility of delivering your project early. How will that affect scope, costs, and schedule?

Here is my response that I did from week 6

Hello Class,

Week 6 Discussion

  • Your project sponsor and customer are impressed with your project schedule, but due to some factors out of their control, you’ve been told to deliver your project early, roughly 15% earlier than anticipated. Using the information from the readings, explain how you would go about assessing the possibility of delivering your project early. How will that affect scope, costs, and schedule?

Assessing the Possibility of Delivering the Project Early

Having to deliver a project early can sometimes be detrimental and stressful. It is vital to understand that a project is carried out under particular constraints. The project depends on cost, time, and scope (Izmailov et al. 2016). The issue at hand of delivering the project early will have effects on the three constraints. It is up to us to ensure that the project management triangle does not crumble due to the adjusted project completion timeline. I will need to understand or select which constraint they will manipulate to achieve the project according to the sponsor’s expectations.

Effects on Scope, Time and Cost

Delivering the project earlier will lead to an increase in costs, probably doubling the intended budget since the time has already decreased (Margetts, 2018). Assessing the possibilities of having to deliver the project early means scrutinizing the availability of labor, human resources, and materials. I should be able to explain to the clients that altering one side of the triangle will have significant implications on the other sides of the triangle. Every party needs to understand that denial of the implications that come with adjusting the time of the project will only bring adverse consequences down the line. Accepting the implications will help me stay on the lookout for any changes, whether unexpected or requested.

Considering the implication on time will make dialogue easier and protect the manager from any liability when things do not go as planned. The clients might have to reconsider their request thoroughly rather than assume that any change will not affect the project release cycle. However, this will only help the project manager if they had conveyed the message to their clients before the project had commenced.
