What Crimes Have Been Committed

Read the scenarios below and then follow the instructions beneath the scenarios to complete the assignment.

Scenario 1:

Debbie is shopping at the local mall and walks into an electronics store. While walking down an aisle, Debbie puts several computer games in her purse. She then starts walking toward the exit. A store employee stops Debbie as she is walking toward the exit and asks to look inside Debbie’s purse. Debbie’s reply is, “I have a gun. Let me go or I will use the gun.”

Scenario 2:

Jane is stopped by a local law enforcement officer for speeding. The officer smells a strong odor of burnt marijuana when Jane rolls down her window. The officer also sees an item on the front passenger seat that looks like a pipe or device to smoke marijuana. The officer searches the car and finds a clear plastic bag on the backseat. The bag contains a white, hard, rock-like substance that tests positive for methamphetamine. Jane is arrested and taken into custody.

  • Assume that the officer lawfully searched the vehicle and seized the evidence.

Scenario 3:

Mary’s 16-year-old son plays on a community traveling soccer team. The soccer team holds various fundraisers throughout the year to raise money to cover the team’s various expenses. Mary is the treasurer of the team. Her duties include receiving and depositing money raised through team fundraisers and player contributions. She has access to the soccer team’s checking account.

Throughout the last year, Mary has been withdrawing money from the checking account of the soccer team and depositing the money into her own personal checking account. As of the current date, Mary has transferred $1500 from the soccer team checking account into her own personal checking account.

After you have reviewed the scenarios, locate the Minnesota statutes regarding the following crimes:

  • Robbery
  • Burglary
  • Theft
  • Controlled substances

  1. For each scenario:t
    1. Identify what crimes have been committed, including the level of the offense.
    2. Support your position by including the wording from the applicable Minnesota statute(s).
    3. Explain how the facts align with the elements of the statute(s).
  2. Compare the scenarios to one another, describe the differences between the possible crimes identified in each.
