- What did you learn about the role of our criminal justice system in
- providing treatment to the mentally ill? Why are individuals with mental illness more likely to be incarcerated than hospitalized? What are the challenges to changing the outcomes for the mentally ill who have been released from incarceration? Please provide specific examples from the book to support your answers.
- On page 159 of the book, Dr. Darold Treffert is credited with coining the phrase, “the mentally ill are being allowed to die with their rights on.” What does this phrase mean to you and what are some examples from the book that support this statement? What challenges exist in the balancing act between protecting patients’ rights and providing treatment to those who really need it?
- If you had to choose one public policy initiative to address the problems and challenges in our mental health and criminal justice systems, what would that initiative be? What would the initiative look like and how would it work? What specific problem(s) would the initiative address and how would it make a positive change? This is your opportunity to think big and be creative. The initiative you dream up can be something already happening but not fully realized or something that is not even in the works.
