Note:  This assignment is not a formal paper.  It is more of an essay in response to the four questions I ask below.  Your work should be 2-4 pages, double spaced with one inch margins, Times New Roman font, 12 point. Include a bibliography of the sources you used at the end of the paper.

Some of us are in our late teens or early twenties, the rest of us span the full range of life experience. Wherever you individually fit into this picture, whether you experienced them directly or have lived in their aftermath, the effects of the cultural and political revolutions of the 1960s are still with us. Music, and the culture around music, was one of the principal areas of identification for the 1960s cultural revolution.

Choose at least two musicians or one genre (for example: rock, soul, rhythm & blues, folk, jazz) contained in Module 5 to focus on regarding the following questions.  You may write about all of the artists if you are interested, but it is not mandatory.

1)  What do you see as some of the most important ways the artist(s) or genre changed in this era? Use our vocabulary of musical terms carefully for specific descriptions.

2)  How about the relationship between the artists and the music-consuming public? Does that relationship become more intimate, more intense? If yes, specifically how?  Discuss specific artists in this context.

3)  What, if any, are some examples of the relationship between music and social and political action in the music of this era? Cite specific examples.

4)  How do you personally relate to the music of this era? Choose particular artists and recordings/videos from our unit to draw on in your discussion.

Very important: your writing must specifically address the topics I have raised.  If your writing is on different topics, and is not specifically oriented to the prompts I have provided, it will not be accepted and you will not receive any credit.

Your essays should rely mostly on readings and listening from the assigned course materials, but you may use other sources if you need to–just be sure to cite the sources.  Our assigned course materials are what you should refer to and build your essays on.  Name specific songs and pieces we have listened to, and describe them using musical vocabulary in a manner that convinces your reader that you have listened carefully to the song.  (Don’t just reference the lyrics.)  Be sure to demonstrate that you have done the assigned reading as well as the listening.   When you are using background material from the Rolling Stone History, The Rest is Noise, or Visions of Jazz readings, indicate that with a parenthetical reference, for example (RSHR&R pg 125-127).  For artists who weren’t specifically covered in our course readings, you may use external sources.  Be sure to cite those sources.

Your work should be double spaced with one inch margins, Times New Roman font, 12 point. Include a bibliography of the sources you used at the end of the paper.
