What responsibilities and/or influence do you have with respect to the training & development of employees and the compensation (pay) of employees?

Functions of Management

Choose a manager to interview. Because people have varying definitions of a manager, the person you interview must meet the following criteria:

  • Has formal supervisory authority over two or more employees
  • Has been in the supervisory position for at least one year
  • Has some responsibility for hiring for employees, i.e. review applications, interviews applicants.

Important Notes:

The “manager” you choose to interview doesn’t have to have “manager” or any particular word in their job title. As long as they meet the criteria above than they meet the requirements of being a manager for the purpose of this assignment.

The “manager” you interview cannot work for the company you’re assigned to for the group project.

Do not interview a manager that is being interviewed by another student for this assignment. Ask the person you want to interview if they’ve committed to being interviewed by another student for any class I teach.

Write a minimum 500-word paper that addresses the following questions related to the four functions of management. Pose these questions to the manager; this is not an all inclusive list of questions. Refer to the slides/text regarding other topics related to each of the four functions.

Planning

  • What goals/objectives do you have for your employees/department?
  • What strategies do you use to achieve the goals/objectives?

Organizing

  • What responsibilities do you have related to the hiring of employees?
  • What responsibilities and/or influence do you have with respect to the training & development of employees and the compensation (pay) of employees?

Leading

  • How do you motivate the employees you supervise?

Controlling

  • How do you ensure you and your employees are on track to meeting department/organizational goals?
  • Are you responsible for managing a budget? If yes, exactly what does that entail.

Organization of paper

  • Your paper should have a cover/title page.
  • The next page should provide background information about manager and their organization:
    • Name, title, name of organization, what the organization does, number of locations, employees, number of employees they supervise, titles of the positions they supervise, etc… If the manager feels uncomfortable providing their name and the name of the organization, be sure to explicitly state that in your paper, but you still need to provide all the other information – what the organization does, manager’s title, etc…
  • Next provide information that addresses the questions regarding planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Present that information in paragraphs; do not type the questions. The questions are simply for you to use to generate information about each function.

Formatting

So again, your first page should be a cover/title page.

Second page should start with a header titled “Background Information” with the requisite information organized into 1-2 paragraphs. Then your next section should start with a header titled “Planning” with the with the requisite information organized into 1-2 paragraphs – same thing for organizing, leading and controlling.

Your paper should adhere to the formatting requirements in the syllabus, i.e. double spacing, font size and type, page numbers.
