  • Love Hurts

Juan and Maria are drinking coffee and talking about her family when he gets a text from Sophia. She calls him names and accuses him of cruelty. It feels like a punch to the gut, and suddenly he can’t breathe. Juan shows Maria the text.

“I don’t know how to stop hurting,” Juan says. “Every time I think I’m doing okay, something happens, and I fall apart again.”

“Think about what Maslow said of self-actualized people,” Maria says. “‘It is as if they were all members of a single family. One’s feelings toward his brothers would be on the whole affectionate, even if these brothers were foolish, weak, or even if they were sometimes nasty. They would still be more easily forgiven than strangers.’”

“Love? Forgive?” Juan asked. “How does that help?”

“Try it and see,” Maria answered.

“I’m not sure how to start,” Juan answered.

“Try acceptance, unconditional acceptance.”

Juan knew Sophia; he’d loved her for years. He’d seen this side of her when she’d been hurt. Could Juan accept it as part of her and move on? Maybe he could.

As you read about psychoanalysis and humanism this week, think about whether you believe Juan is on the right path. What role do the theories in psychoanalysis and humanism continue to play in psychology, and why do they remain influential?
