When you first considered counseling as a career path, what did you imagine it would be like?

Assignment Details: Prior to enrolling in your counseling program, you may have envisioned what your future professional counseling practice might look like. Perhaps you contemplated what your office might look like and who your colleagues might be, but most importantly, the type of clients you would help. Now that you are here and in the first course of your program, it will be very important for you to begin thinking about what interests you in the field and what your professional goals might be in your future work.

Throughout this course, you will participate in a Blog with your colleagues. The purpose of this Blog is to provide you an opportunity to share your passion for your future professional practice, share your knowledge, build your community network with your colleagues, and to refine your writing skills.

In this week’s Blog, you and your colleagues will share interests and professional goals, the types of clients you hope to work with, and what you are excited about as you continue in your graduate program, as well as any apprehensions you might have. This is your opportunity to connect and communicate with your colleagues and to get to know your colleagues as professional peers.

Question 2 When you first considered counseling as a career path, what did you imagine it would be like? You may not have asked yourself that question yet. Now is the time to consider what your future career might be like on a day-to-day basis.

Imagine these details: the clients you see yourself helping, the location of your workspace, the coworkers you interact with, and how you might become an advocate and agent of social change. With this clear picture in mind, you can better prepare yourself for developing the skills and professional identity of a mental health counselor.

For this Spark Discussion, contemplate the details described in the paragraph above (and feel free to go beyond them—the sky’s the limit), and prepare to share your vision for your future as a mental health counselor. @
