Here’s some reflection answers I have done for the class

1.Before reading Schwegler and Shamoon’s article, my understanding of a research paper was significantly different. While writing many research papers, I focused on rephrasing and summarizing information from specific sources contributing to the whole paper. I believed that research papers focused on understanding the research topic and rephrasing my research sources into a full research paper. I also believed that the process of writing a research paper differed depending on the subjects and topic which made it challenging when trying to focus on the main points of the research paper concerning what the instructor wanted to be included in the paper. I also understood that research papers are meant to interpret, explain, and gather information in an organized way, especially for academic purposes. Moreover, I believed that research papers were fully meant on helping people learn more about a topic and how to handle specific questions about the topic or define their knowledge on a specific topic.

However, after reading the article, my understanding of the purpose of research has greatly changed. It mainly involves understanding the different aims of the research, identifying them as the whole components of an effective research paper. The article identifies these aims as “awareness of scholarly content, method of investigation, specific subject, conclusion about the nature of the subject, and the relationship of a specific subject to broader subject area” (Schwegler and Shamoon 821). They show that one of the things that seemed most important to me from this article was the ability to use all these aims as a way of explaining and focusing on a broader topic, dividing into sections of interest that people can easily relate to during their research.

I envision myself applying what I have learned from this article to your research project this quarter in many ways. Firstly, it is essential in establishing an organized research process that favors both the informative and interpretive methods of research. It also makes it easy for people to summarize the whole wider subject both in the introduction and different aspects of the research paper, highlighting the integral parts of both the topic and the various adaptations. The article fully utilizes the enhancement of better research processes and the use of research approaches that reflect the topic of concern. As a result, it changes the understanding of research papers both as academic papers and as sources of encouraging informative actions in writing.

2.In the article “Googlepedia: Turning Information Behaviors into Research Skills” McClure identifies the problems with modern research habits and gives more insight into how we can properly research the modern society. McClure identifies that with modern technology, search engines such as Wikipedia and Google can provide a lot of information. McClure, therefore advises how these search engines should be used for effective research. She reveals that these sites should not be used as the primary sources in research but only to help the researcher know more about their research topic. McClure also persuades students to understand that conducting research should start with the search engines and end in the library. She identified that many students over-focus on search engines while carrying out research. McClure also mentions that students should be more knowledgeable to understand reliable sources that they can use during research. She finally provides eight steps to conduct good research.

While researching about the impacts of drug abuse among college students, I have applied some of the ideas and procedures that McClure recommends in her article. For instance, I have used google to gain a better understanding of the research topic and included materials from the library as McClure recommends that the research process should blend both. Some of the keywords that I used during the research include “substance abuse” “impacts”. I arrived at these terms by focusing on the words in my research topic. From the preliminary research, I discovered that there are many articles, documents about the topic of drugs. This discovery helped me to narrow my focus to materials that focus on drugs among college students. Considering that my potential research topic is that drugs and substance abuse negatively affects the academic performance of college students, I plan to go through this project through the following steps:

  • Conduct online research through google to understand more about the research topic
  • Search the college online library using the keywords to identify various material that relates to the issue of drugs
  • Focus on materials that focus on drugs among college students
  • Select material published within five years
  • To ensure that the materials identified are reliable, I will only select books per reviewed journals.
