Dear Prof. ENC 102:

Write a letter to your professor in which you evaluate your performance in class and the participation grade you think you deserve in the course. Consider the following questions when answering: did you complete all HW and assignments? Did you participate in class? Were you on time? Did you follow directions?

  • So far I have an A in the class ( 95%/100%)
  • I did answer all the homeworks and class assigments
  • I did participate in the class ( Socratic Seminar online and in class)
  • I was always on time ( never late, never missed a class)
  • I did follow all direction given by the professor.

The format to adopt should be that of writing a formal letter which will include: the address, dates, salutation, main body and the ending of the letter.

As to whether to use MLA format will depend on the needs for the assignment. In most cases, official letters adopt the standard business format which applies the left justified format of paragraphs and single spacing. However, since letter, is being written to a professor who is an academic, then it would be okay to use the MLA format since this person will be familiar with this format.

Explanation:

The format that is stated here is the MLA format. This does not mean that all letters have to follow the MLA format, however, since this letter is being written to an academic (a professor), who is well familiarized with different formats, then, it will be okay to use MLA format.

The format below is that of a formal letter:

The addresses:

Your address:- Should be written on the top left side roughly 2 inches from the top of the page.

Date:- Leave a single line and write the date which should be write in the month, date and year format

Recipients address:- Leave another line and write the recipients address, polite title should be included in the address like Ms, Mrs, Dr, Prof.

Salutation:

Leave another line and type the salutation for instance Prof. Xxx(name of the professor) where the name of the recipient is unknown, use a names like “Dear Professor”

Main body of the letter:

You can begin the letter with greetings. From there, head straight to the reason of writing the letter. Include details that are informative to the recipient or that will convince the recipient into buying your ideas. In the event that you have to include any citations, follow the MLA format for citations since the letter format used is MLA.

Ending of the letter

In the conclusion part of the letter, you can write what you need the recipient to do. It would be important to also add any relevant contact details that you can be contacted with. Skip a line and write your ending. you can use a words like “Yours Sincerely”, then leave another line and write your names in full and sign.
