Discussion: User Research

This discussion encourages you to reflect on your past projects or courses that involved technology and whether you can see User Research being useful to you or not. The discussion has two components:

  1. Write a post in your discussion group about whether you would have found it useful to do User Research in any of your prior or current courses or projects. You can feel free to discuss if you already did User Research in a different course/project and what you found useful or not. If you can’t think of situations when User Research would have been useful for your projects, you can also write about that, just make sure to present arguments either way. You should refer to at least one aspect or concept that you learned in the lecture or readings about User Research. This post can also be part of a reply to someone else’s post, but if it is, you should try to add your own arguments in the reply. We expect this post to be 4-5 sentences.
  2. Reply to someone else’s post in your discussion group. Your reply should be constructive. It is not sufficient to say “I agree”, or “me too”. Your reply can be in agreement or disagreement with your peer. Please use arguments to say why you agree or disagree with your peer.

Each of the posts above should be thoughtful and constructive. You can disagree with each other, but do it respectfully. At least one of the posts should be a reply to someone else. Both posts can be replies, but at least one of them should talk about your experience.

Last year, I helped create a small 2D platformer game that other students playtested. This user research was necessary to determine aspects of the game that the players could not figure out, while also seeing any frustrations or positives about the design at that point. The user research we performed was similar to contextual inquiry, with both observation and interviewing, though one after another rather than simultaneously. The best lesson learned from that experience was to perform user research as early as possible in order to determine problems early on. User research was important and useful for this project in order to determine any problems in the game that needed to be improved (given other players’ opinions), as well as to learn what we were doing right.
