Week 5 brought fourth the idea of language profiling, which was intriguing to see, as you would think after all of these precautions and laws set in place by companies in order to override this kind of bias are still not enough of a preventative measure to avoid profiling. This to me coincides with profiling that occurs with employers and the names of applicants, there are so many ways in which one can inherently discriminate against another on the basis of their bias, whether that is the way they talk, their name, and where that would make it “seem” like someone came from. When discussing linguistic profiling during discussion, I brought up the fact that obviously as my brother and I share the same obviously non-Anglo last name, but my brother has a foreign first name, but my name which is not inherently foreign or difficult to pronounce. This made me wonder whether the profiling could occur for both of us, but more or less severe for another, as I only possess one name which is hard to pronounce.
An interesting idea from week 5 was also the controversy surrounding the film “Minari”. I completely could understand the controversy arising from a domestic film being awarded with the “Best Foreign Language Film”, the way I would rationalize this is by putting myself in that situation, feeling as though the constant efforts of those who are “foreign” not being rewarded accordingly, leading to all praise being diverted to those who are “international”, and I can’t help but wonder why? What theory in linguistics can I connect this to? If I, a foreigner watch this film and felt the sentiment, and moved by the film, without knowing that the film was a domestic one, would it change my feelings? After all, the trailer did serve it’s purpose, and that was to move the viewer, but it is a much deeper principle rooted within this concept. The constant dismissal and ignorance for the works of those who are foreign is a concept that we can connect with making the distinction between foreign and international in order to conceptualize the differences.
For week 6, the video of Joe Biden using the word “articulate”, and it being perceived as a more offensive meaning based on who it Is described, is something that struck me as very important. I believe that often times words can be interpreted a completely different word when applied to different people/ situations. In this specific context, I can’t say it was a proper way of utilizing the word articulate, but it also makes me think further into whether calling any individual who is multilingual “articulate” in a language is immediately offensive or not. If someone told me I was articulate in my second or third language, I’m certain I would be flattered, but applying it to one in a way that is conveyed as shocking that they are able to BE articulate is another way of perceiving this word in particular.
From lecture 6.5, I took away that slang is obviously a way to belong to a group in society and create a mutuality in being from a certain place, or having a certain group one would like to belong to. Comparing and contrasting a sociolect with the use of slang is something I thought of, as it is clear that if a sociolect of a certain age group, or social group depends on these factors, slang could be the same way. For example, as young people may have terms or slang to themselves which they use when speaking with one another, this is in fact a facet of a factor which narrows one into a sociolect.
