Question 1 – Case Study
Robert has tried various methods in the past to help his students learn to spell well. education psychology. He has had students work from a spelling book that includes exercises to help them learn the words. He has allowed students to develop their own spelling lists. He has given them spelling words from units of instruction in other subjects. The one thing that each of these approaches has had in common
is that they all involved drill and practice. He has always had students write their words multiple
times and/or make flash cards and practice their words.
However, Robert isn’t sure this is the best way to learn how to spell. One of his colleagues has
her students use all the words she wants them to learn in several creative writing mini-projects
throughout the week. Robert decides to find out which approach would benefit his students the
most.
He begins by placing all of his students’ names in a hat. He then draws the names of half of the
students. These students will use the writing method that Robert’s colleague suggested. The
others will continue to use the drill-and-practice methods that they have used in the past. He tells
his students that he wants to discover which method (of learning to spell words) he should use in
class, thinking that this way his students will understand why they are doing different things. At
the end of the week he gives the class a spelling test. He calculates the average score for each
group and compares them.
