Assignment:

Choose from one of the following prompts to explore in your analysis:

Exploring Text and Context:

Explore how one of the postmodern conventions used in The Joy Luck Club reflects the historical and/or social context in which it is written.

Sample Thesis:

The supernatural convention is an element of fantasy that authors use to illustrate extraordinary ideas in impossible stories. Neil Gaiman’s novel, American Gods, is immersed in the supernatural and is weaved out of personified ideas that take the form of gods. He uses supernatural elements, such as these gods, to personify iconic American innovations, emphasizing the conflict between traditional thinking and modernization.

Exploring Text and Audience:

Explore how one of the postmodern conventions used in The Joy Luck Club relates to a specific audience demographic.

Sample Thesis:

Neil Gaiman’s American Gods explores the character, Shadow’s, involvement in the battle between two god factions with the dispersion of anecdotes depicting the life of minorities either in America or immigrating to it. Neil Gaiman subverts the typical fictional nature of the fantasy genre by alluding to realistic stories of struggles faced by immigrants who come to America through the use of the gods and the tales of supernatural encounters, scattered throughout Shadow’s story. Gaiman includes these stories throughout his novel in order to portray the real issues immigrants face as minorities in America.
