1- The Nobel Prizes’ Diversity Problem in Science
In this week diversity/Inclusion article Marc Zimmer a professor discusses how the Nobel prizes selection lacks diversity, it has been over 100 years, and nothing changes. He said that only three percent of the awardees were woman and zero of the 617 awardees in the science field are black. He states that the majority of awardee are white men. He continues that it is obvious and does not need an investigation to see that woman and black scientist are not nominated. In addition, nomination is by invitation only and no information on the nomination process cannot be revealed until after 50 years. This article shows a real lack of diversity in an honored society.
Diversity does not only have to do with the color of one’s skin or their beliefs, in fact weight in society is a huge form of diversity and plays a big role on how people feel about either themselves or another person. After reading and viewing the short clip in this article, weight diversity is important in society and change being made is very good. The article states that many women dream to be these models that they see in stores or online and feel as if they are not good enough. “Inclusion refers to the process of promoting a sense of belonging and empowerment by involving everyone and valuing their unique talents and contributions.” People now in days must maintain this inclusion so that others feel belonged. I like how the article stated that they are starting to get these plus-size models to re-create old high fashion ads because this can definitely create diversity in a good way and help others feel included.
