Analysis of Francis Fukuyama’s 1988 Essay

In 1988, political scientist and conservative pundit Francis Fukuyama asserted that all of history was a march toward a democratic political system and a global capitalist economy. In his view, the collapse of the Soviet Union meant that human history was essentially complete–the “good guys” had won.

Your task in this essay assignment is twofold: first, trace developments up through 1988, in order to help your reader understand why Fukuyama might have reached that conclusion. Then, looking at the period after that, use the evidence provided in this unit to illustrate the conflicts that we’ve seen since 1988 (which would, of course, prove Fukuyama wrong.)
