You don’t need to read every word, but skim through all of them to get a sense of how they’re put together. Recall from the assignment sheet that research reports often begin with a title page, then a one page summary of the report, then sections breaking down the problem, then sections breaking down the solution, and then conclude with back matter like appendecies, bibliographies, etc.
1. Name one thing that surprised you about these research reports as a whole. How are they different from the research essays you’ve written in school?
2. Any questions about these? Does reading them raise any questions about the assignment we’re working on, or about your own topic/paper?
3. Which of these research reports is the best, and which is the worst? Give me 2-5 reasons for each answer. And remember: longer and more detailed doesn’t mean “better.” Some audiences need a lot of detail, some don’t. Sometimes reports can have a ton of long detail but be hard to understand/use (*cough* Grossman Yanak and Ford LLP *cough*).
4. Pick one of the reports, and write me a big meaty paragraph or two evaluating it. When you’re writing a really short text evaluation like this, it’s often helpful to start with your thesis statement as the first sentence, then back up into background, and then advance your subclaims/evidence. So, do that: give me a thesis, then introduce the text (author, audience, topic, date, context, etc.), and then advance a couple claims about what it’s doing well or poorly, citing concrete evidence (quotes/pages, maybe?).
