¡Freedom on the Move is a project historians are undertaking to create a crowdsourced, comprehensive database of all runaway slave advertisements that will eventually include all of North America.

¡For Lecture Participation: Spend time going through 10 runaway ads on their twitter feed (this will take about least 30 minutes to look at 10 ads). From the ads that you read answer these questions:

¡How are ads describing enslaved people? Why are enslaved people described in these ways?

¡Who is writing these ads, and who is reading them?

¡How do the ads commodify enslaved people?

¡How are the ads and the kinds of accounting that DainaRamey Berry discusses (earlier slids) committing a form of violence against enslaved people?

¡What is the relationship between enslaved women, early gynecology, and resistance to enslavement? Use two examples from Cooper-Owens, and your choice of an additional assigned primary source.

¡Compare and contrast the assigned anti-slavery speeches by Angela Grimke and Maria Stewart. How did they appeal to their audience? Which speech is more persuasive to you, and why? Use two examples from the sources.

¡Select two assigned sources and discuss what can we learn from the experiences of enslavement and enslaved peoples’ resistance to the institution in each selected source? Why were different forms of resistance necessary? Pick from Nat Turner, Frederick Douglass, and Dred Scott. Give at least two specific examples.
