Demonstrate your knowledge of the diverse material that is the Torah in this assignment.

Response to my Grandfather

Assignment focus: the first five books of the Bible. Demonstrate your knowledge of the diverse material that is the Torah in this assignment. Remember to demonstrate your knowledge of course ideas by referring to and citing them.

Instructions: The glossary in NOAB (Book) states this about the Torah: “The word (and hence the title) is sometimes translated as “law,” but this translation is misleading since the five books contain much more than law codes and regulations” (NOAB, 2287).

Scenario: Imagine you are having a conversation with your favorite grandparent and it goes something like this: “Hi sweetie! What are you studying in your religion class?” You respond something like “We just covered the Torah, you know, the first five books of the Bible.” Your grandparent then says, “Oh, all that law stuff. How boring!” How do you respond?

Response: Write your response to your favorite grandparent, noting at least three points of rebuttal to your grandparent that studying the Torah is “just law” and that it must be boring. Your assignment should contain at least two citations from the biblical text itself and at least one citation from scholarly notes at the bottom of NOAB from any or all of the books in the Torah. There is no page limit for this assignment but each of your three points should contain at least four sentences. You are pretending to respond to your grandparent, but this assignment should also contain complete sentences and careful demonstration of engagement with course material! Your reflective thoughts might get in there since you are talking to your grandparent, but the best assignment will be how you can translate course ideas, and stay grounded in the biblical text, when talking to a general audience such as your favorite grandparent.
