In current society, new technologies are invented now and then. It is interesting that for all the inventions that we enjoy today, they were once ideas owned by people. As such, the birth of every invention is having an idea in mind that can help offer a solution to a certain problem in society. Ideally, most of these ideas are imaginations that turn up to be of great help to people once implemented. The act of first imagining and coming up with scientific ideas that will later become a reality is known as science fiction (Schneider, 2016). This paper seeks to explore the invention of self-driving vehicles, which was first imagined in science fiction.

The idea of having self-driving cars can be dated back to Futurama, an exhibit that took place in the New York world’s fair in 1939.  Apparently, the sole goal of the exhibit was to demonstrate how the world would be like in 20 years’ time from then. The vision included the construction of a highway system that could accommodate the self-driven automobiles. Today, we have vehicles that are partially controlled by humans with autonomous features such as assisted parking and brake arrangements.

Unlike there before, when all the vehicles were totally controlled by humans; today, many vehicles are autonomous since they possess different features that require minimum human control. Fully autonomous vehicles have also been invented. The implementation can be attributed to the high use of systems such as GPS and other sensing systems on the roads that can sense signs, signals, and road barriers. The self –driving vehicles have the capacity of self-functioning. Also, the use of Artificial intelligence has promoted the implantation of self-driving cars in the world. Though the vehicles are not yet fully operational, they are expected to start operating soon (Shariff, Bonnefon & Rahwan, 2017).

The use of the GPS ns other electronic maps has enhanced the implementation of the autonomous vehicles in a large way.  They provide unique features that consist of digital maps. These maps use technology and can guide the vehicles on the signals, provide all the geographical information, all the building information, different signs located on the roads, and road lavatories, among others.

The use of autonomous cars has a couple of advantages as compared to the normal vehicles that are driven by humans. Unlike the normal vehicles driven by humans, the autonomous vehicles use sensors, thus not affected by the state of the driver. As such, these vehicles tend to be safe and efficient as compared to human-driven vehicles. However, there are some moral questions that the technology of the new autonomous vehicles poses. Some of these questions include whether the vehicles will promote immorality, such as terror attacks in the world. There is a high chance that most terror groups will use these vehicles to attack their respective targets.  There are also high chances that technology will promote laziness since most of people will prefer to use these vehicles that require no human input. As such, this technology may propagate evil in the world in one way or the other (Shariff, Bonnefon  & Rahwan, 2017).

In conclusion, it is apparent that in the current society, things are changing now and then due to the inventions and innovations that are made daily. One of these innovations is the use of self-driving cars. They have the capacity of functioning without any human input, which makes them more safe and efficient as compared to human-controlled vehicles. The implementation of these autonomous vehicles has been stimulated by technological advancement in systems such as the GPS and other systems such as sensors that avail all the signals and signs on the roads. To this end, it is paramount that in few years to come, autonomous vehicles will be everywhere in the world.
