Shortage of Police Literature Review

Shortage of Police Literature Review

In last week’s Individual Project, you selected at least 2 topics that you surmised were critical issues in the modern criminal justice system. The topics were to come from issues, problems, and policies from law enforcement, corrections, or the court system. Consider that you are working toward a final capstone project position paper, and make a selection of 1 of the topics you picked.

In this assignment, you will expound on one of the topics you selected by conducting a literature review. Use the literature you developed for references to prepare an analysis of the topic, and identify required changes, revocation, or additions to the issue, problem, or policy you selected for study. Here, you will provide research analysis to defend your position on the selected topic.

Tip: The closer you can write this paper to the finished product for the capstone project, the more you will have completed toward the goal of the research. Looking ahead, you might consider if you are going to integrate this topic with a secondary topic that will be addressed in Week 3. Because you will be able to integrate the papers for Weeks 2 and 3 into the capstone project final paper, do an exceptional job and do not worry if you exceed the page requirement. It means you will have less to do in the final week when the pressure is on. The idea of your research is to direct the information you develop and analyze toward your final capstone project.

Assignment Guidelines

  • Address the following in a literature review of 1–2 pages:
    • What topic have you selected for this assignment? Explain.
    • How did you select the topic you are researching? Explain.
    • Now, take the sources from the annotated bibliography, and conduct a literature review.
  • Address the following in 1–2 pages:
    • Why is this topic important to the criminal justice system and the citizens of the United States? Explain.
    • What are the various topic issues, problems, or policies associated with your selected topic? Explain in detail.
      • What do you propose as the changes to these topic issues, problems, and policies? Explain in detail.
      • Defend your changes with articulated support from legitimate peer-reviewed reference sources. This is absolutely critical for your paper to be taken seriously.
  • Tip: The defense of your paper cannot be stressed enough. You must take care to support factual statements with valid reference material.
    • Use the criticism of the instructor in this course for this paper as a guide toward a rewrite if necessary to make your final capstone project a major success.
    • Remember not to take it personally when you are criticized in terms of modifications to the paper.
  • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

Various issues face the department of criminal justice, which happens to be in the most vital arm of government. The entire judiciary is faced with numerous problems that are aired on the media from time to time (Bronson & Berzofsky, 2017). In most cases, the issues are addressed, but they tend to reoccur time and again. Problems in any department or arm of the government are inevitable, but they can be handled well when they occur. This paper seeks to explain various issues facing the criminal justice department.

Law enforcement

One of the main issues facing law enforcement is police officer shortage. The numbers of police officers that are on duty are very few, considering the state’s population. The crimes that are being aired all over on media are due to a shortage of police recruits (Diamond & Weiss, 2016). This is a tragedy to the state because the rates at which criminal offenses are announced now and then need immediate attention. For example, a large number of police officers are selected to retire at the end of the year, and the vacant positions that are announced are a quarter of the number that has retired.

Another issue is the election of strong judges who are not Waverly and who follow the law to the letter. In most cases, people are charged, released they go out to the public, and perform the same crime (James & Glaze, 2016). They are brought back to the court before the previous case has been settled. The judges elected should be able to make decisions that are straight and with confidence that the ruling made will cause negative consequences.

Correctional system

The correctional system is one of the departments that face difficult challenges, for it deals with different people who have committed criminal offenses. One of the main challenges is the inmates’ addictions. Some of the inmates have addiction problems, which make it difficult for them to rectify, not unless they are taken into the rehab (Jamil,Mohyuddin & Mohyuddin, 2015). If they are not well rehabilitated after they are released from prison, they go back to the public and repeat the same offenses that made them get arrested.

It is also challenging to take care of the inmates’ mental health. Most of the inmates leave the bars having a lot of mental challenges that finally make them become antisocial (Maguire, Nix & Campbell, 2017). They might become worse than they were as they were being imprisoned, or they might become withdrawn and finally fall into depression by the thought of them being isolated by society.

The court system

One of the policies that affect the court system is the sentencing laws. The sentencing law has been enhanced currently, and severity in sentencing is lately being considered. This is not a wrong policy to enhance, but the problem is that most of the offenders end up being imprisoned on long terms (Yi, Turney & Wildeman, 2017). This leads to overpopulation and crowding in prisons, which has become an issue lately.

The court emphasizes the policy of “three-strike” that states that if a person repeats an offense three times, they should be sentenced for life imprisonment. This policy is used to prevent the person from performing crime gain (Nisar, Rasheed & Qiang, 2018). The strategy is not very useful because the person can commit another different crime and not necessarily the previous one. The court systems need to get another more effective policy.

The issue on police shortage has interested me because of late the rates of crime are going up day by day due to the lack of police officers(James & Glaze, 2016). The current state of security is wanting and needs a lot of attention and can only be improved by increasing police recruits. Another issue that really interests me is the issue on the mental health of the inmates (Villa, 2017). This is an issue that I have always desired to know the reason why, after a person is arrested, we expect the person to be released in society as a changed person. This happens otherwise because most of the people who come out of the prison they tend to be terribly antisocial.

In conclusion, therefore, the criminal justice department is very vital in the judiciary, and the crisis it faces affects not only the people concerned but the whole nation. As stated in the above discussion, the issues facing the judiciary are, at times, inevitable, and for them to be corrected, they need a lot of funding.

The Law enforcement system is currently facing various challenges, one of them being a shortage of police. This is a challenge that has an impact on every individual because every person needs security. The shortage of police officers is a great risk and a threat to the nation. Issues and incidences have emerged whereby after a thorough investigation is done, finally, it is found out that the incidence could not have happened if there was enough security (Bishopp, Worrall & Piquero, 2019).
