Students will identify and abstain from the use of a substance or activity over a 5-week period. The purpose of the assignment is to help students gain an understanding of what it is like to be controlled by a substance or activity and the process of self-denial. Being mindful of individual health and wellbeing, students may choose alcohol, television, cigarettes, video games, social media, soda, or any similar activity.

  • First Week (between class 1 and class 2) – ADDICTION – students will log their use/consumption/engagement amount (this includes amount and frequency, e.g., 4 – 12-ounce cup of regular coffee each between 6 am and 10 am) of the substance or activity (at least 5-days of data). At the end of week one, students will use data to develop a recovery plan (e.g., abstinence or harm reduction) and how you will monitor and track use, what types of potential penalties for relapse, and social support networks if desired.
  • Week two to four – RECOVERY/RELAPSE/RE-ENGAGEMENT – students monitor their “recovery plan” and track challenges/successes/reactions/etc.
  • At the end of week five, students will develop a 6- page paper detailing their experience which should include their logs and reactions. On the final page, the student is asked to reflect on their learning experience and how it can apply to future work with clients.
